Flu season is back. And just because COVID is still here doesn’t mean we can sleep on the flu.
Many people thought that the flu went away last year. That was NOT the case. While we did see less flu cases last year, that was due to widespread mask wearing, as well as social distancing. This year, many places have relaxed mask mandates, meaning we will see more people with the flu again this year.

You can get sick with both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time, and since both viruses attack the same system (your respiratory system), contracting both at the same time could leave you quite sick. The COVID vaccine can help prevent you from getting severe symptoms if you catch the virus. The flu vaccine can be up to 60% effective in preventing you from even catching the virus to begin with. Together, they but up a pretty good fight from respiratory illness this fall/winter.
Now is the best time to get your flu shot. Flu season is typically October through May, and getting your flu shot before the season starts is one of the best ways to keep yourself, and those around you healthy. And if you haven’t gotten your COVID vaccine, it is a great time to do that as well. The CDC has said that it is safe to get both vaccines at the same time, however you will most likely receive a shot in each arm.

While the COVID vaccine is only available for those 12 and up, the flu vaccine is recommended for those 6 months and older. Both COVID and flu vaccines are available at all PDCHC locations. To schedule your COVID or flu vaccine, please call 502-774-4401.
