Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, we celebrate the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was one of the faces of the American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King advocated for rights to vote, desegregation, labor rights and other basic civil rights for black Americans, including access to quality health care.

“We are concerned about the constant use of federal funds to support this most notorious expression of segregation. Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Medical Committee of Human Rights Convention, Chicago, IL, March 25, 1966

It was around this time that The Neighborhood Health Center, known today as Park DuValle Community Health Center, was formed. The health center would service Louisville’s Park DuValle neighborhood where access to quality health care was limited and transportation to the city’s other medical facilities ended at 5 pm.

As we take time to reflect and honor the work of Dr. King, we also look to the future and continue to work towards his dream and doing our part to provide safe, high-quality, affordable health care to all.

In honor of Dr. King, all Park DuValle CHC locations are closed on Monday, January 17, 2022
