While the Fourth of July is a celebration for many, for some it is a time of extreme stress. Those who deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can find July 4th to be extremely difficult. As much as 10% of the population deals with PTSD, often as a result of gun violence or military combat. Things such as fireworks can trigger these feelings if not prepared.
We’re not saying to completely cut out your fireworks display. Most people with PTSD can be fine with fireworks if they have time to prepare for them. It is the fireworks at 3am or on July 6th that cause the most problems because they are unexpected.
If you or someone you know has PTSD, make sure you know what coping mechanisms help and be prepared. You can also enjoy non-fireworks alternatives like sparklers! If you plan on using fireworks, let you neighbors know and be aware of those around you. Some cities and states actually have laws about how late you can shoot fireworks, be sure to check before you go crazy!
Overall we want everyone to have a happy and healthy fourth! Remember many doctors offices will be closed, only go to the ER if you are dealing with a real emergency.
