1 in 8 American Women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
October is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American women 55-64, but about 10% of people diagnosed before age 45. It is recommended that if you or a family member has been diagnosed with breast cancer, or you are over age 40, that you get a yearly mammogram.
Most insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover mammograms at no cost to you. A mammogram usually takes about 10-15 minutes from start to finish.
It is also important to do self breast exams. Even if you regularly get a mammogram, it is still important to do a self exam monthly. Cancerous cells grow faster than typical, healthy cells and a tumor or mass can appear quickly. The earlier a mass is detected, the better.
